UNV-Hong Kong Universities Volunteer Programme

 
Agency for Volunteer Service is the Hong Kong cooperating organization of United Nations Volunteers (UNV) since 1998

 

Established in 1970, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) provides opportunities for volunteers to contribute to peace and development through volunteerism.

Agency for Volunteer Service (AVS) is the Hong Kong cooperating organization of United Nations Volunteers (UNV) since 1998 and seeks to promote international volunteerism.  In 2013, an updated Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two parties to provide new opportunities for youth to participate in volunteering worldwide.

 

UNV-Hong Kong Universities Volunteer Programme

The Programme funded by the Home Affairs Bureau was launched by AVS, supported by Hong Kong Volunteers Association and Peace and Development Foundation on a pilot basis in 2015 for 2 years.  It allows about 10 local university undergraduates each year to participate in a 6-month assignment under the UNV University Volunteers modality serving under UN field units / agencies in South East Asia.

 

 

Objective

The Programme contributes to global peace and development worldwide while enabling the selected undergraduate students in Hong Kong to build capacities, enhance service learning and strengthen cultural understanding in the neighboring regions.
 

Target Volunteers

Around 10 undergraduate students in Hong Kong would be selected each year from the nominations of the partner universities.

  • The Education University of Hong Kong
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  • The Lingnan University
  • The University of Hong Kong

Eligibility

  • at the time of application, enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme in one of the partner universities 
  • Hong Kong resident aged between 18-29 recommended by the university with good reference
  • commitment to global peace and development
  • proficiency in spoken and written English; knowledge of other languages of the working destination will be an asset
  • volunteering experience in or out of Hong Kong
  • high motivation, enthusiasm, and adaption ability to different culture and environment
  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • literacy in computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and social media 
 

Commitment of Volunteers

  • participate in pre-departure training in Hong Kong and orientation in the duty station
  • complete a 6-month assignment
  • submit mid-term and final report on the assignment
  • participate in post-assignment de-briefing
  • share experience and inspirations gained from the assignment 
 

Volunteer Assignments

Duration          : around 6 months
Locations         : UN agencies / field units in South East Asia
​Service Scope  : health and education; disaster risk reduction in the area of environment; youth issues and other areas with focus on information technology
Job Duties       : administrative support, monitoring and evaluation, communications and
                          outreach, etc.
 

Financial Support

  • round trip travel costs from Hong Kong to duty station, monthly living allowance and health / life insurance will be fully funded 
 

Application Procedures

  • candidates must complete the application form and be nominated via the partner university
  • shortlisted candidates must attend the selection interview(s)
  • final selection of candidates will be subject to decision of the UNV
  • candidates who fail to attend the interview(s) will be considered as withdrawal
